Project Description
Is possible a 100% renewable island?

Info
Acronim: ISLA RENOVABLE (Ref: FCT-13-6356)
Partners: Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables, S.A. (ITER) – Agencia Insular de Energía de Tenerife
Duration: September 2013 – November 2014
Financed by: Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT) – Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad. Convocatoria de ayudas para el fomento de la cultura científica, tecnológica y de la innovación 2013
The project
This educational project will continue the dissemination work of the tools developed in the Isla Renovable project funded by FECYT in 2013 and therefore aims to show students the feasibility of implementing renewable technologies in an insular electric system taking into account the socio-economic and environmental features involved.
Students will deal with issues not usually included in the school curriculum, such as the electricity remuneration system or the tons of CO2 that are kept from being emitted into the atmosphere for every megawatt generated from renewable energies.
This initiative, supported by the CajaCanarias Foundation through its Call “Aid to Education Project 2015”, will bring secondary and high school students the possibility to participate in a sideline activity to the conventional tours to ITER´s Technological Walkway and on the other hand, will continue with the dissemination of the tools developed in the ISLA RENOVABLE project. The students will work with the educational tool ISLA 100 %, developed by ITER and the Tenerife’s Energy Agency and co-funded by the FECYT. This tool is a multiplatform app whose aim is to substitute the electrical system of a virtual island, entirely powered by conventional energy sources, for a 100% renewable energy electric system and achieve the greatest possible renewable penetration.
